Moral Dilemma

To P.E. or not P.E.?

I got an email from the House Of Blues the other day...I opened and read it...it said they was suckers...

Nah, actually it said that Public Enemy was playing on March 8th, all original members will be there, and it's a fairly reasonable $30. I've never seen P.E. live before, they're another of the indisputably important hip-hop groups of all time...and yet, I can't talk myself into buying tickets. I just have the suspicion that it won't be a good concert...Flava Flav is a reality show caricature/joke on VH1, Chuck is better off lecturing and writing, there won't be any energy, and the group is just too far past the glory days to put on a quality show.

But it's like how can I, as a hip-hop head nerd, bypass such a concert? Don't I owe it to myself to attend this? I mean, how many more times is P.E. going to tour?

Has anyone seen them in recent years? Anyone purchased any of the albums they've relased since 2000? Please, someone talk me into going to this...

How wrong is this?

I was really hoping the House Of Blues would send out an email on Tuesday offering 2 for 1 tickets... Alas, no such email arrived. I think I'm skipping...

Nerd, I've had the same dilemma recently with The Roots (more so with myself than them). I had never seen them before and I've heard how great their shows are. I have "missed" them multiple times since attending my last rap concert (Outkast Stankonia concert 2000, show started 2 hours late). My wife knowing that I like The Roots and her thinking how "cute" Lupe Fiasco is got us tickets. Interesting because although she likes some rap she is far from what I would consider a HHH. Not even close. So we went to see them this past Sunday.

I knew in the back of my mind we wouldn't be staying for the whole show because, 1)My wife isn't really into rap, and more importantly 2) She had to work the next morning (~1.5hr commute).

Lupe was, eh, ok. It wasn't that I didn't like his performance, it was the fact that I couldn't really understand what the F he was saying even though I know the songs. WHY DO RAPPERS YELL at their live performances? I've never understood that. If you aren't yelling on the studio version of a song, why yell when you are doing the song live? Someone please explain this to me? Also, I may be getting old, but why is the music so damn loud?? The music is basically drowning out the yelling rapper? Maybe it was where we were seated. Or maybe I think I am getting too old. When he performed the Coolness, however, the acoustics where perfect, and he wasn't yelling. Even my wife noticed it. That is a tight ass song.

The Roots acoustics where much better. I could understand Black Thought much better than Lupe, and the band was great. Yes, they are definitely a Hip Hop Band. Even though we left early (I'm not sure how long they were on after we left), I was satisfied because they turned this "Rap" concert into a jazz, funk, rap, old school rap concert even doing a number of songs from one of my all time fav albums "Do you want more?". And best of all during one song they turned it into a full on rock show. ?uestlove, a tuba, and a Bad Ass guitar player performed Dylan's Masters of War. This song blew me away. The guy playing the guitar sung the song and shredded the guitar like no body's business. ?uestlove's drum solo left NO doubt that he is a bonafide BADASS!! After that I didn't even have to get that look from the wife. I was satisfied. We stayed one more song, You Got Me, and I asked her if she was ready and that was it.

All in all, I'm glad I went but I'm not sure how many more rap concerts I will attend. The age component in Rap music is a peculiar beast. I somewhat feel too old to go to rap concerts and you think PE is too old to put on a quality performance. We don't do that for any other genre of music, do we? No one says The Police are too old to get back together and perform. The Rolling Stones are damn near 90 years old and every time they have a farewell tour people line up to go see them.

WHY IS THAT??

damn I need my own blog :-)

pic: Really, really wrong.

I saw PE with Anthrax at the Aragon a while ago, and they were already washed up. Don't go.

Hey, you should start a new trend over at this site: one blog entry per year. You could keep people guessing year-round as to which day of which month it might appear any given year. It'll keep people interested for sure.

Seriously though, you promised you'd be writing something soon. What gives?
